Kalman Pool
Balloon Museum, Emotion Air Exhibition documentary
Kalman is a Chinese sculptor and painter. Working with VR sculpting software, he creates large-scale inflatable ‘bio-creatures’. His painted work incorporates luminous paint, displayed under ultra-violet light.
Kalman Pool and his team approached me to capture the installation of Voyage, his largest installation to date, and the first time he is exhibiting his ‘luminous opera’ series in Europe and the UK. The brief was to capture the installation progress, from start to finish, and the first audience interactions with the piece.
The production was shot over 5 days at the Old Billingsgate in London. I used timelapse to capture the extensive construction at speed, in addition to creative B-roll footage of the artworks being inflated and installed in the space. The narrative structure of the film was led through an interview conducted with Kalman, situated immersed in his artwork.
